Ladies Night Out: What to Wear (Designer Version)

Ladies' Night Out

A night out with the girlfriends trumps even date night as far as primping and outfit-perfecting goes. We know there’s going to be photos taken all night long, and we’ll all be eye-ing up each other’s looks and commenting on lip hues and talking about where we bought our purses. So here is my take on a Lady-in-Red kind of Ladies Night Out look.

We are pulling out all the stops today. Calling in the reinforcements, going for a straight-up, head-to-toe designer look. In general, I’m a budget-friendly kind of girl. But I draw a lot of my inspiration from the Greats in fashion, like Valentino. The construction of his garments is stunning. Every pucker, every seam, every hemline, all of it with intention and purpose to the overall impact of the piece. If this dress got any more sophisticated it would become Jackie Kennedy Onassis herself. The fit and flare is flattering to all figures and the floral bunching detail at the top adds the perfect touch of interest and femininity.

As for the accessories, I sifted through a lot of shoes, but kept coming back to the edgy Valentino studded heels, for an overall monochromatic look. And what drew me to the watch is the gold color and a few unique features. Mainly, I really like the braided look of the band, on this one of the IWC Watches at Chrono24, it’s definitely a unique departure from the traditional chain-link. Taking a step back, we certainly have a lot of color and texture going on in this look, but what was lacking was a bit of pattern. So when I came across this classic Diane Von Furstenberg black and white grid-patterned bag, I knew it was the one for the look. It brings a little heritage to the look, with a bit of a more vintage vibe.

In this look, we’d be the talk of the town, or at least our girlfriends’ chatter for the evening.

This is the urban take on the traditional Southern belle garden tea party. Then we’ve got the city girl attitude with the sleek cognac heels and tortoise shell boyfriend watch. The perfect blend, I dare say. Probably about 1 lump of sugar to be exact. Pinkies up, everybody!

Afternoon Sailing :: What to Wear

Oh, we have no bananas!

This outfit is perfect for an afternoon sailing. At least I think. Let’s just say if I were ever to go sailing, this is what I would wear. I’m still daydreaming about the day I actually go sailing. Anybody want to take me for a spin? The skirt with the banana print is hands down the focal point of the outfit. I believe, just like a room’s decor, an outfit needs a jumping off point, an anchor (to keep with today’s theme), to hold everything in place. And these playful bananas do just that. I of course added bursts of color all over this outfit, the first of which is the red-orange cashmere sweater from London W11. It’s lightweight but a nice little covering to keep out the chill from the wind. The jade espadrilles play off of the stripe in the top, and each of the bracelets coordinate with another aspect of the outfit. This is one of those outfits that makes me happy just looking at it.

Sail away! And in the spirit of Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, sing

“yes! we have no bananas… we have no bananas today!”

Summer Picnic :: What to Wear

Summer Date

Summer is the season of love. So grab your beau, pack a picnic, and head to the nearest park for a sweet little afternoon date. I’ve got you covered on what to wear. When planning a summer outfit, or just any season’s outfit really, I usually like to find 3 colors and one metal hue for the ensemble. In this look, we have jade green, red, and yellow as the colors and gold as the metal. An extra bonus is mixing in texture, like the rhinestone pave on the bracelets, the rope in one of the bracelets, the lace in the top, the leather on the clutch, and the canvas of the high-heeled wedge. In case you end up in a park where lots of walking and maybe some rugged terrain is involved, opt for flats! Came across this pinboard with some helpful outfit ideas for flats. Happy picnicking!

wedges: rocket dog

 navy bangle: coldwater creek

The Daily Grind :: What to Wear

Summer Uniform

If there was one outfit that encapsulates my summer uniform for work, this is it.

This dress is case-in-point the reason for my recently re-awakened crush on the wrap-dress (this one’s only $33!). We can go bold and bright without sacrificing comfort and professionalism. This dress is a lightweight material to combat warm weather. And the length is right. For my job, I spend a good amount of time on the floor, no, not the dance floor, though my awesome moves suggest otherwise. I work with kids and families. I’ve got to be able to sit comfortably on the floor when the situation calls for it. Another bonus, is that with the tie pulling fabric to the side of the waist, it’s a flattering silhouette. Overall it’s super comfortable while still making a summery statement with the color and print.

And yes, the clock on the wrist. I know it’s a little old-fashioned to actually use a watch for function as well as form, but it is a little more discrete than a head-turn toward the clock or a clicking of the phone to check the time. I found some great Guess Watches that are gorgeous and reliable that I’d like to snatch up to be part of my daily routine. Maybe as a little gift for myself once I pass my family therapy MN licensure exam… #fingerscrossed!

Basic two-strap flat sandals (these are only $29!). If I worked in an office downtown and spent less time in and out of cars and homes, I would wear my beloved heels 9-5. Trust. But for my personal daily grind, a pair of sandals will do. And these two-strap white sandals are IT.

And for the other accessories? A big ol tote that can handle my lap-top, a couple of file folders, and a healthy selection of lipsticks, while still managing to look cute. This one is sturdy and crazy good quality. A lifer. I simply can’t help but add a colorful statement necklace to the mix. This one is quite reasonably priced too, from Max & Chloe.

What do you like to wear to work?
